Most of us trust them because they work. And they work because we trust them. As you can see, it was a roundabout debate. But that’s often what belief is. For example, why do we believe that a beautiful picture and a piece of paper with letters and numbers on it have no value? Because we trust the government printed it and said it’s legal. Without that trust, everything falls apart. If a nuclear disaster happened and the country was divided into small warring territories, how much would that money be worth? nowhere. Because we no longer believe that the government that printed it will respect it. If we had to choose one issue to build confidence in the Canadian system, it would be the electoral process. Against the lobbyists, the election period is short, reflecting the will of the people. For example, the current Liberal government had only 34 seats before the last election. They have a third party status behind the Conservative Party and even the NDP! Today they run a majority government with 184 seats. Because we Canadians can change the way we think about a party if we don’t like the way it’s going. All my life I have voted for the Conservatives, NDPs and Liberals. So the parties cannot disregard my vote and must propose policies that actually make sense. In the office, they have to show that they are efficient and productive. If not, I’m willing to choose someone else.
We painfully realize that our system is not perfect and is still flawed. But that’s part of the Welcome to fooville foos gone wild shirt and I will buy this problem. We know we’re not perfect, so we strive to be better. We work to reduce injustices like previous treatment of First Nations. We apologize for our transgressions and move forward to become a better version of ourselves. And we believe it will eventually. Just because something is made doesn’t mean you can’t know a lot about it. For example, I know people who know Harry Potter like crazy, and even if I came from England and traveled in Europe, they would think they know more about it than I do.
