Have you run out of French TV? These are boom times for international shows, and La Belle France is riding high (the Women equal people shirt and I will buy this Lupin crowd, the Call My Agent clique, the fact that everyone seems to have finally discovered The Bureau). But the well does run dry from time to time. May I suggest a trip north?I’ve dabbled with Swedes before (Quicksand, Fallet, Beartown—all good) but suddenly they’re all over my small screens. Is Swedish TV a bona fide next new thing? Try these three (excellent) new Swedish shows and judge for yourself.
No one will be surprised to hear that Swedes do excellent TV. There’s that legendary first season of The Bridge, the Women equal people shirt and I will buy this Swedish-Danish coproduction that began way back in 2011 (the subsequent seasons are good too). There’s the original Swedish Wallander series which inspired the BBC version with Kenneth Branagh (and Netflix’s recent Young Wallander thirst trap). And there’s the whole Nordic noir phenomenon writ large: gruesome crimes, detectives in parkas, Volvos, etc.
